What to Expect at Your First Color Correction Appointment

Color correction is one of the most searched — and most misunderstood — services in the hair world. Maybe you had a box dye go wrong. Maybe a previous stylist left you with banding, uneven tones, or a color that just doesn't look like what you asked for. Maybe you've been trying to go lighter for years with mixed results.
Whatever brought you here, I want you to walk into your color correction appointment informed, prepared, and with realistic expectations. Here's everything I wish every client knew before sitting in my chair in Downtown San Diego.
What Is Color Correction?
Color correction is the process of fixing previous color work that has gone wrong or simply isn't where you want to be. It's not a single service — it's a category of services that can include:
Removing or lightening box dye or previous color
Correcting banding (uneven stripes of color)

Here's something I always tell new guests: color correction is a process, not an event.
Hair can only be lifted so many levels safely in one session. Trying to go from dark box dye to bright blonde in one appointment almost always results in damaged, compromised hair. A skilled colorist will prioritize the integrity of your hair over speed.
Depending on where you're starting and where you want to go, color correction can take:
One long appointment for simpler corrections
Multiple sessions spread weeks apart for complex transformations
Months of gradual work for significant changes like going from black to blonde
This isn't a limitation — it's responsible hair care. And it protects your hair health for the long term.
What to Bring to Your Appointment
Inspiration photos: Bring multiple photos of what you want — and photos of what you don't want. More is more. The clearer your vision, the better I can translate it.
Your hair history: Be completely honest. Tell me everything — box dye, at-home bleach, keratin treatments, henna, anything. There are no wrong answers, only missing information. What's on your hair affects what I can safely do with it.
Realistic expectations: We'll discuss what's achievable at your consultation, taking into account your current color, hair condition, and timeline.
What Happens During the Consultation
Before any color correction, I do a thorough consultation that includes:
Reviewing your hair history and goals
Strand testing where appropriate to predict how your hair will respond
Scalp and hair health assessment (buildup, damage, porosity all affect color results)
A clear explanation of the process, timeline, and what we can achieve in one session vs. multiple
I'll never start work without making sure we're aligned on expectations. Surprises are great at birthday parties — not at color appointments.
Will It Damage My Hair?
Color correction involves chemical processes that do affect the hair. But there's a significant difference between a skilled colorist who works with your hair's integrity in mind and one who just tries to get the result as fast as possible.
In my chair, every color correction is approached with a scalp-first, hair health mindset. I factor in your hair's current condition at every step and prioritize keeping it strong enough for the transformation you want — even if that means taking it slower.
How Much Does Color Correction Cost?
Color correction is priced based on the time, complexity, and products required to safely achieve your desired result. Unlike a standard color appointment, every color correction is unique, which is why it is billed hourly rather than at a flat rate.
My color correction services are $150 per hour.
