How to Make Your Hair Color Last Longer
How to Make Your Hair Color Last Longer
(A Stylist's Guide)
By Kelly Moreno Vindel | The Scalp Report
You just left the salon feeling incredible. Your color is fresh, dimensional, and exactly what you wanted. And then three weeks later — it's already looking dull, brassy, or faded.
Sound familiar? Color fade is one of the most common frustrations my San Diego clients bring up. The good news: most of it is preventable. Here's exactly what I tell my own guests about making their color last.
Why Hair Color Fades
Before we get to solutions, it helps to understand what's happening. Hair color molecules sit inside the hair's cortex (the inner layer). When those molecules are exposed to heat, UV rays, harsh cleansers, or mineral-heavy water, they break down and escape through the cuticle — leaving your color looking dull and washed out.
The more open your cuticle, the faster color fades. And an unhealthy scalp or damaged hair means a more porous, open cuticle — which is why scalp and hair health are so tied to color longevity.
1. Wait Before You Wash
After a color service, wait at least 48–72 hours before washing your hair. Color continues to oxidize and settle after you leave the salon — washing too early can disrupt that process and cause premature fading.
Use that time to let your color fully lock in.
2. Switch to a Color-Safe Shampoo
Regular shampoos — especially those with sulfates — strip color molecules along with dirt and oil. Switch to a sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo formulated to gently cleanse without fading.
Better yet, look for low-tox options with clean ingredients that don't contain harsh detergents, silicones, or synthetic fragrance that can disrupt your scalp's balance over time.
3. Wash Less Often
Every time you shampoo, some color is lost. Extending your time between washes is one of the simplest ways to preserve your color longer.
If you struggle with oily roots, work on gradually training your scalp rather than reaching for dry shampoo daily (which, ironically, causes buildup that makes oiliness worse over time).
4. Use Cool Water to Rinse
Hot water opens the hair cuticle — which is great for cleansing but terrible for color. Always rinse with cool or lukewarm water to help seal the cuticle and lock color in.
This one small change can make a noticeable difference in how long your color stays vibrant.
5. Protect from UV Rays (Especially in San Diego)
San Diego sun is gorgeous — and brutal on hair color. UV rays break down color pigment and can turn your beautiful brunette brassy or make blonde look yellow and washed out.
Use a UV-protectant hair product before spending time outdoors
Wear a hat on beach days
Consider a UV-filtering leave-in or serum if you're outside frequently
6. Address Hard Water
San Diego's water is high in minerals like calcium and magnesium. These minerals deposit on hair and create a film that dulls color, makes it fade faster, and can even shift tone (making blonde go brassy or flat).
A shower filter is one of the most underrated investments for color-treated hair. Using a chelating or clarifying shampoo once a month also helps remove mineral buildup before it builds up too much.
7. Use a Toning Gloss or Purple Shampoo
Blonde and highlighted hair tends to go brassy as the color fades. A purple or blue shampoo used once a week can neutralize warmth and keep blonde looking fresh between appointments.
For brunettes, a toning gloss applied at home every few weeks can refresh dimension and shine between color services.
Ask me at your appointment what I recommend for your specific color — the wrong toning product can make things worse.
8. Prioritize Scalp Health
This one surprises people: your scalp directly affects how long your color lasts.
A scalp with inflammation, buildup, or a compromised barrier produces hair with a more porous, open cuticle — meaning color fades significantly faster. Clients who maintain regular scalp rituals consistently notice that their color stays fresher, longer.
If your color seems to fade unusually fast, a scalp analysis might reveal exactly why.
9. Get a Gloss or Glaze Between Services
A clear or tinted gloss applied between color appointments seals the cuticle, adds shine, and refreshes tone — without the commitment or cost of a full color service. It's one of my favorite ways to keep clients' color looking salon-fresh at the halfway point.
The Bottom Line
Making color last isn't complicated — but it does require intention. The right products, a few habit adjustments, and a healthy scalp underneath all make a measurable difference.
I'm always happy to give personalized recommendations at your appointment. If you're in San Diego and looking for color that's designed to last, I'd love to work with you.
