How to Transition Your Hair Care
from Summer to Fall
By Kelly Moreno Vindel | The Scalp Report
Summer is hard on hair. Between sun exposure, saltwater, chlorine, heat, and humidity, most people's hair arrives at September looking and feeling more depleted than they realize. And then the season shifts — the air gets drier, indoor heating kicks in, and your hair and scalp have to adjust all over again.
The good news: a few intentional changes to your routine can make that transition smooth and set your hair up for its healthiest fall yet. Here's exactly what I tell my San Diego clients as we move into the cooler months.
Step 1: Do a Summer Damage Assessment
Before changing anything, take an honest look at where your hair is right now. Run your fingers through it. Does it feel:
Dry or brittle at the ends?
Rough or porous (soaks up water quickly)?
Dull or faded in color?
Lighter or brassier than before summer?
If you answered yes to any of these, your hair has taken on some summer damage — and fall is the perfect time to address it before it gets worse.
Step 2: Book a Post-Summer Trim
Split ends don't heal. They travel up the hair shaft over time, causing more breakage. If you haven't had a trim since spring, now is the time. Even removing half an inch of damaged ends makes a significant difference in how healthy your hair looks and feels going into fall.
Step 3: Deep Cleanse First
Summer leaves behind a residue of sunscreen, salt, chlorine, and product buildup that your regular shampoo may not fully remove. Start fall with a scalp detox or clarifying treatment to clear that slate before layering on moisturizing products.
In San Diego, hard water mineral buildup compounds this — a chelating shampoo once a month helps remove those deposits that dull color and weigh hair down.
Step 4: Shift to More Hydration
Summer routines tend to be lighter — lighter conditioners, fewer oils, more dry shampoo. As the air gets drier in fall, your hair needs more moisture to compensate.
Swap your lightweight summer conditioner for something richer. Add a weekly deep conditioning mask. If you've been avoiding leave-in conditioner, fall is the time to bring it back — especially on your ends.
Step 5: Refresh Your Color
Summer sun is notorious for fading color and pulling warmth — especially on highlighted or blonde hair. Fall is one of the most popular times to refresh color, and for good reason: richer, deeper tones look stunning against fall light and tend to last beautifully through the cooler months.
Whether you want to deepen your color, correct summer brassiness, or try something new for fall, booking a color consultation now means you're not scrambling last minute before the holidays.
Step 6: Reassess Your Scalp Routine
Scalps often swing from oily in summer (heat and humidity increase sebum production) to dry in fall (cooler, drier air strips moisture). What worked for your scalp in July may not be what it needs in October.
Signs your scalp needs a fall reset:
Increased itching or tightness as temperatures drop
More flaking than usual
Hair that feels drier at the roots than it did in summer
A scalp analysis at the start of fall gives you a clear picture of where things stand and what your scalp actually needs going into the drier months.
The Bottom Line
Think of fall as a reset — a chance to repair what summer took, restore balance, and set your hair up for the months ahead. A little intention now goes a long way through the holiday season and into the new year.
