How to Prep for Your Hair Appointment (And Get the Best Results)
By Kelly Moreno Vindel | The Scalp Report
What you do — and don't do — before your hair appointment matters more than most people realize. A little preparation can make a significant difference in your results, especially for color services, scalp treatments, and precision cuts.
Here's everything I tell my own San Diego clients to do before they sit in my chair.
Before a Color Service
Come With Clean-ish Hair
Your hair should be washed 1–2 days before a color appointment — not freshly washed, and not extremely dirty. Here's why:
A small amount of your scalp's natural oils provides a protective layer during lightening services, which can reduce scalp sensitivity. But too much buildup from dry shampoo, heavy products, or days of oil can actually block even color absorption.
The sweet spot: hair washed 24–48 hours before your appointment.
Skip the Heavy Products
In the days leading up to your appointment, avoid heavy dry shampoo, styling creams, or oils near your roots. These create a barrier that can interfere with how color processes — especially near the scalp.
Be Honest About Your Hair History
This is the most important thing you can do. Before your appointment, take a moment to think about:
Any box dye you've used (even years ago — it can still be on your ends)
At-home bleach or lightening treatments
Henna or metallic dyes (these can cause serious reactions with professional color)
Keratin or Brazilian blowout treatments
Any medications you're taking (some affect how hair lifts)
There are no wrong answers — only missing information. The more I know, the better I can protect your hair.
Bring Inspiration Photos
Collect 3–5 photos of hair you love. More is better. Try to include photos that show the hair in different lighting and from multiple angles — what looks platinum in one photo might be a very different tone than you expect.
Also bring photos of what you don't want. This is equally helpful.
Eat Before You Come
Color appointments can be long — sometimes 3–4 hours for complex services. Have a meal beforehand so you're comfortable, and bring a water bottle. It makes the experience much more enjoyable.
Before a Scalp Treatment
Don't Wash Your Hair Immediately Before
For scalp analysis and treatment appointments, I actually prefer to see your scalp in its natural state — not freshly washed. Come with 1–2 days of natural oil present. This allows me to see how your scalp actually behaves and identify patterns more accurately.
Note Your Symptoms
Before your appointment, pay attention to and make a note of:
Where on your scalp you experience itching, tightness, or discomfort
How quickly your hair gets oily after washing
Any products you've recently added or changed in your routine
Any changes in shedding you've noticed
This information helps me do a more thorough and targeted analysis.
Come with Your Current Products
If possible, bring or take photos of the products you're currently using — shampoo, conditioner, any scalp treatments, styling products. Ingredients matter, and knowing what's in your routine helps me make better recommendations.
Before a Haircut
Come with Your Hair in Its Natural State
For precision cuts, I want to see how your hair naturally falls. If you can, come with hair that's air-dried or in its natural texture — not blown out or heavily styled. This helps me cut to work with your natural movement, not against it.
Know What You Want (and What You Don't)
Think about:
How much length you want to keep or remove
Whether you want layers, and if so, how much movement
How much time you're willing to spend styling daily
Any specific concerns (cowlicks, growth patterns, thickness)
Be Ready to Communicate
Good haircuts are a conversation. Don't be shy about asking questions or clarifying what you mean. The more we communicate before I make the first cut, the better.
General Tips for Any Appointment
Wear a top that's easy to remove — loose or button-front tops work best. Tight turtlenecks or crew necks make cape placement awkward and can get in the way.
Arrive on time — late arrivals affect the quality of your service and the clients after you.
Put your phone away — at least during the consultation. Looking down at your phone changes your head position and can affect how products are applied or how cuts fall.
Speak up — if something doesn't feel right during your service, say so. I'd always rather know in the moment than find out you were uncomfortable afterward.
The More Prepared You Are, the Better Your Results
A great hair appointment is a collaboration. I bring the skill, the knowledge, and the products — but you bring your hair history, your vision, and your communication. When both sides show up prepared, the results reflect it.
I'm currently accepting new guests in Downtown San Diego at Flirt Salon. I'd love to meet you.
