Fall is one of my favorite seasons for hair color. The light changes, the aesthetic shifts, and suddenly everyone wants something richer, deeper, and more dimensional. And honestly? The trends this fall deliver.
But not every trendy color is created equal — some look stunning for weeks, others fade fast or require more maintenance than clients expect. As a color specialist in Downtown San Diego, here's my honest take on what's worth trying this fall and what to consider before you commit.
1. Rich Brunette with Caramel Dimension
Deep, glossy brunettes with warm caramel or chestnut highlights woven through are having a major moment — and for good reason. This look is incredibly flattering on a wide range of skin tones and grows out beautifully, making it one of the most low-maintenance options for fall.
Longevity: Excellent. The contrast between deep base and warm highlights means grow-out blends naturally. Touch-ups every 10–14 weeks are typical.
Best for: Anyone wanting to go deeper for fall without committing to a flat, one-dimensional color.
2. Espresso Brown
Rich, dark, almost-black brown with subtle depth and shine. Think classic Italian coffee — deep but not flat, with just enough warmth to keep it from looking harsh.
Longevity: Very good. Dark colors tend to last well, though the first few washes may see some fade as excess pigment releases.
Best for: Those who want a dramatic shift from lighter summer color, or anyone who loves a bold, polished look.
What to know: Going very dark from a lighter base is a commitment. Returning to lighter color later requires color correction.
3. Copper and Auburn
Warm, fiery tones ranging from soft ginger to bold auburn are one of the most searched fall colors every year — and they look absolutely stunning in fall light.
Longevity: Moderate. Reds and coppers are notoriously prone to fading because red pigment molecules are the largest and escape the hair shaft first. Expect to refresh every 6–8 weeks and use color-protecting shampoo religiously.
Best for: Clients willing to maintain the color with regular glosses and toning appointments. The payoff is worth it — copper hair in fall is chef's kiss.
4. Smoky Blonde
Rather than the bright, beachy blonde of summer, smoky blonde leans cooler and ashier — think champagne, pearl, or cool wheat tones. It's sophisticated, editorial, and pairs beautifully with fall wardrobes.
Longevity: Good with maintenance. Cool tones require regular toning to prevent warmth from creeping back in. A purple shampoo routine and a toning gloss every 6–8 weeks keeps this looking intentional.
